Painting

The Painting Emphasis leads students through a wide variety of traditional and contemporary approaches to using paint as a communicative medium. The early and intermediate stages of the program focus primarily upon learning to control the media through an insistence upon optical fidelity to three dimensional models. While the advanced level directs students through the development of communicative strategies within the realm of painting. (Some abstraction is introduced to widen the visual vocabulary though; the main thrust of the program is mimetic in nature.)  The entirety of the emphasis is bolstered by a robust exposition of both historical and contemporary models which the student will use as grounding points for their exploration.

Studio Equipment:

Klopfenstein easels

Utrecht Artist Series paints

Courses:

Painting I - Oil paint serves as the primary vehicle for learning how to control the direction of brushstroke, the viscosity of the paint body, the rendering of a wide variety of value/luminosity targets and edges, and the amount of paint on the surface of the canvas.

Painting II - Involves intermediate work with oil paint and an investigation of color layering through semi-transparent and transparent glazes. The scope of materials is broadened by exploring the use of watercolors and acrylic paint and, as well, the student is led through an exposition of strategies for combining paint media.

Painting III - Incorporates further exploration of technical applications within the chosen medium. The main focus is upon developing a cohesive, visual vocabulary which conveys information to the viewer.
